Globally, many of the greatest threats to human health are directly related to safe drinking water, or to water borne or water dependent diseases. The availability of safe drinkable water and effective wastewater treatment to more than 99% of the UK population delivers a huge health and hence economic benefit to the nation. These health benefits are one of the unique selling points for UK expertise on international markets.
How can water quality in remote locations be tested quickly and cheaply?
The challenge
The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that around a quarter of all humankind is carrying intestinal parasites, as a direct result of inadequate sanitation.
However, when the WHO published international guidelines for drinking-water safety in 1984, the only portable water testing equipment available was ungainly and heavy to transport. For public health workers and aid agencies, a cheap, effective and reliable water testing system for use in remote locations was essential if lives were to be saved.
The Water Security Knowledge Exchange Portal supports the objectives of the UK Water Partnership - a collaboration between the water industry, policy and research communities. It provides guidance and co-ordination for water research and innovation in the UK.
