How to restore and maintain lakes so they support services to the tourism, leisure and recreation industries. For these purposes lakes must support fisheries, be suitable for water based sports, and must maintain their aesthetic appeal.
How was water quality in Loch Leven restored?
The challenge
Loch Leven is a large, shallow lake in lowland Scotland that is important as a tourist destination. It is also renowned for its brown trout fishery, internationally protected plants and waterfowl, and as a nationally important RSPB nature reserve.
Will wetland restoration be sustainable?
The challenge
Wetlands have been threatened by losses for centuries, with drainage and conversion for intensive agriculture, peat harvesting and river channel modification significantly reducing the area of wetlands and their character.
