UKCP09 (Met Office)

Gridded data sets based on surface observations have been generated for a range of climatic variables and may be downloaded by registered users.

The primary purpose of this data resource is to encourage and facilitate research into climate change impacts and adaptation. The data sets have been created with financial support from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and they are being promoted by the UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP) as part of the UK Climate Projections (UKCP09). The UKCP09 report The climate of the UK and recent trends uses these gridded data sets to describe UK climatologies and recent regional trends.

Daily Datasets

The daily data sets are available in two formats.

  • A grid for each day covering the whole of the UK, downloadable in 1-year blocks, as space-delimited text files
  • Time series of daily values by grid point, downloadable in blocks covering 50 km x 50 km squares, as comma-delimited text files
Datasets currently available from 1960 to 2011.

Monthly Datasets

Monthly gridded data sets at 5 x 5 km resolution are available for 16 variables. The list of available variables together with a definition for each variable. can be found by following Further information below.

The monthly data sets are available in two formats.

  • A grid for each month covering the whole of the UK, downloadable in multi-year blocks, as space-delimited text files
  • As a time series of values by grid point, downloadable in multi-year blocks covering the whole of the UK, as comma-delimited text files

Annual Datasets

Annual gridded data sets at 5 x 5 km resolution are available for 12 variables. The list of available variables together with a definition for each can be found by following "Further information" below.

The annual data sets are available in two formats.

  • A grid for each year covering the whole of the UK, downloadable as a single block for the whole period, as space-delimited text files
  • As a time series of values by grid point, downloadable as a single comma-delimited text file covering the whole of the UK

Average Datasets

Long-term averages for at least one of the 1961-1990, 1971-2000 and 1981-2010 climate baselines are available at 5km and 25km grids, and at a regional scale.
